Jac Van Bruinessen
Interview date 1st April, 2006 During my trip over to Greystanes I had the pleasure to interview a member who should be an inspiration to all in the refereeing ranks Mr. Jac Van Bruinessen. Jac has been with the Association for more years then he would care to remember. He is partaking in his 28th year and is the oldest active referee in GDFRA. Jac is also a Life Member of GDFRA. Whilst at Greystanes I watched Jac referee two Over 35 games. “So what” you say, guys do it week in week out. Yeah, that’s right but not at the age of “74”. That’s not a misprint. God Bless You Jac!!!! 1. What is your reason for refereeing? I was following my sons around while they were playing and when my youngest decide to start refereeing I decided to give it a go as well. I loved it and have been doing it ever since. 2. Worst moment in reference to refereeing?
Being forced into
a dressing room because of the behaviour of some disgruntled players. I
ended up with my ref’s bag on top of the dressing shed’s roof.
When I was at my peak and doing a Premier League Grand Final at Castle Hill which I thoroughly enjoyed. 4. What would be the best advice you could pass on to another referee? Just to go out there and enjoy yourself. 5. On a long plane trip who would you most like to sit next to and why? I don’t really care. Just make the most of the experience. I’ve never had any problems with anybody who I have sat next to. 6. What other hobbies/interests do you have apart from refereeing? Between my wife and myself we collect stamps and have a coin collection. 7. If there was one thing you could change in regards to refereeing/laws what would it be? I really have no comment. I’ll leave that up to the greater minds of the game. 8. If you had a chance to go on the ultimate holiday where/what would it be?
Of cause it
would have to be Germany for the World Cup in June. I saw Australia play
Uruguay.
I hope I
never get to that position, but would probably spend it on refreshments. That’s mainly for others to judge, but if I had to pick one it would be being too patient on the field. 11. What is your pet hate in reference to refereeing? I hate hearing and seeing all the wrangling that takes place. It takes all the fun out of the game. 12. If you compared yourself to an animal what would it be and why? That’s hard. Maybe a dog as I’m always friendly and would be wagging my tail. 13. What are your refereeing/management aspirations? Management wise I did my share as Treasurer for 5 years and that’s now beyond me. Refereeing wise, as long as I’m able to and the body stays healthy.
