WHO DO WE REF FOR - October, 2013
On Saturday 5th October a new partnership was struck in
football’s heartland of Western Sydney. The Western Sydney Wanderers, local
Sudanese community and Granville District Football Referees Association (GDFRA)
created a new partnership in order to improve the number of qualified referees
in Western Sydney, in particular among the Sudanese migrant community.
The first course saw twelve highly motivated members of
the local Sudanese community undertake the Level 4 Junior Referee Course.
This course was organised with GDFRA members Steve Prattent and Kieran
Fisher covering the education sessions. The course was run over seven hours,
with a variety of classroom and practical match scenarios used.
Tim Thorne, the Community, Pathway and Football
Development Manager for Western Sydney Wanderers was on hand during the day. He
commented “This is just one of the many initiatives the Wanderers have in place
to engage the local community, with the hope it will be extended to other
migrant and disadvantaged groups in the future."
The current Assistant Secretary and member of the
Technical Sub-Committee of GDFRA Kieran Fisher said “Through the Wanderers and
local Sudanese Community this program allows us to not only build up our
membership but increase the number of qualified referees in New South Wales.
The day has proven to be very successful and the interest in joining our branch
was extremely high, we never know one of these boys may go on to be our next
Hyundai A-League or FIFA qualified referee.”
This is sure to be the first in a number of events organised through this
new partnership, with referee education and the wider game of football to be
further strengthened as a result.

TAFE Boss's Soccer Secret - May, 2012
The following article was published in the Liverpool Champion dated 16th May, 2012 and written by Paul Haigh. Titled "TAFE Boss's Soccer Secret" It is about your webmaster's other life and is but a small snippet of my life in football over the years.
He grew up in London, also spent time in Salford, in the north of England, and lived for a while in Ireland. He turned his back on a promising goalkeeping career with English club Crystal Palace. ‘‘I came to Australia on loan to play soccer with Auburn United in the State League,’’ Mr Baker said. ‘‘Then I decided to stay in Australia and play soccer here. That’s the way my life turned out. ‘‘I was playing for Crystal Palace’s second grade team and I was there when I was 15 and 16.’’
Mr Baker continued playing soccer at State League level for many years. He still plays soccer and hopes to continue for a few more years yet. He also adjudicates on young referees and assesses their development in games. Mr Baker began work as an apprentice fitter, machinist and toolmaker before a long career in engineering. ‘‘For many years I worked for a big company, Lamson Engineering, and looked after South-East Asia. I was away a lot travelling and working,’’ he said. ‘‘Then I wanted to get a job which kept me at home more, and got an offer to start teaching engineering with TAFE.’’ Mr Baker began teaching with TAFE in 1986 and became Liverpool College manager in 2006.
Liverpool TAFE College employs 250 staff and between 6500 and 7000 students study a wide variety of courses and trades. Mr Baker says his job entails many things including providing adequate resources for teachers and students and making sure administration runs smoothly. But he admits that he does miss teaching, which he says he found very rewarding. ‘‘The biggest lift you can get as a teacher is when a student you once taught comes up to you, say five years later, and thanks you for teaching them and remembers you.’’

AGE NO LIMIT TO MAN IN BLACK - February, 2012
The following article was published in the Parramatta Advertiser dated 1st February, 2012 and written by Steven Deare. Titled "Age no limit to man in black - Filipczyk back for 33rd season as a Referee". Wilf is one of GDFRA's longest serving referees and it is fitting that this article has been written about him
Age will not weary him. At 71 Wilfraed Filipczyk is preparing to lace on the boots, take up the whistle and referee for another soccer season.
If you're playing in the Granville District, chances are you have had - or will have - the Greystanes man controlling your match. Filipczyk is not just refereeing children's games either. "I think I might be the oldest active referee in NSW who still does Premier League or Senior 1's", the spritely veteran said. "I still enjoy it as much as when I started." "I do it for the sake of the sport, as well as my own fitness."
That long history means players often remember "Wilf" when he arrives at their own ground on a Saturday. "I've been doing this for 32 years. In every team, I know somebody", he told The Advertiser. Yet is not so easy for him to remember all the players. "I have people come up and say 'remember me, you refereed me when I was 16'. "I have to say 'Sorry, I don't remember you'."
Filipczyk started refereeing unofficially when his children, who played for Greystanes, needed a referee for their matches. After they stopped playing the sport, he registered to become an official. "I could see how desperate the clubs were for referee," he said. "I would see the under 9's saying 'Mum we have a referee with the uniform today'. They enjoy it."
He has gone on to referee countless district and representative matches. Only once was he assaulted, when a player wanted a corner awarded instead of a goal kick. At half time the player kicked Filipczyk in the backside. He laughed off the incident to The Advertiser, and recalled his standard reply to critics. "A lot of people say 'how much money to you get?". I say 'not enough to put up with some of you blokes'."
