WHO DO
WE REF FOR - October, 2013
On Saturday 5th
October a new partnership was struck in football’s heartland of Western Sydney.
The Western Sydney Wanderers, local Sudanese community and Granville District
Football Referees Association (GDFRA) created a new partnership in order to
improve the number of qualified referees in Western Sydney, in particular among
the Sudanese migrant community.
The first course saw twelve highly
motivated members of the local Sudanese community undertake the Level 4 Junior
Referee Course. This course was organised with GDFRA members Steve
Prattent and Kieran Fisher covering the education sessions. The course was run
over seven hours, with a variety of classroom and practical match scenarios
used.
Tim Thorne, the Community,
Pathway and Football Development Manager for Western Sydney Wanderers was on
hand during the day. He commented “This is just one of the many initiatives the
Wanderers have in place to engage the local community, with the hope it will be
extended to other migrant and disadvantaged groups in the future."
The current Assistant Secretary and member of the
Technical Sub-Committee of GDFRA Kieran Fisher said “Through the Wanderers and
local Sudanese Community this program allows us to not only build up our
membership but increase the number of qualified referees in New South Wales.
The day has proven to be very successful and the interest in joining our branch
was extremely high, we never know one of these boys may go on to be our next
Hyundai A-League or FIFA qualified referee.”
This is sure to be the first in a number of events organised through this new
partnership, with referee education and the wider game of football to be further
strengthened as a result.
Story by Kieran Fisher, Assistant Secretary – Granville
District Football Referees Association.
